The Institution of Electrical Engineers - the largest professional institution in Europe - has established 30+ Professional Networks (PNs) to act as a subject or industry focus for its members and other interested professionals. The subjects covered are as wide ranging as the total interests of the IEE's membership, but deliberately also aimed to attract professionals who are not members of the institution. |

Aerospace is one of our industry PNs, as we have so many members engaged in the area worldwide. The PN is more than just a web site, though the IEE has taken full advantage of the developments in Internet technology to make the site the hub of a virtual community. Outside of its web presence, the Aerospace PN will continue to promote conferences and lectures, encourage papers submitted to the extensive range of IEE journals and publication of significant new books in the subject. The Aerospace PN web site offers a number of features, many of which are common to other Professional Networks. The home page gives an introduction to the site, highlights matters of interest to the community and acts as a guide to other site material. There is a news section featuring a daily update sourced from the world's aerospace literature and supplied by NewsEdge, the leading news supplier. An Online Library offers the full text of journal and seminar papers from the IEE's own resources, plus pointers to the full text of material held elsewhere on the Internet. Examples of this latter include selected NATO RTO (Research and Technology Organisation) material and items from the AIAA. Forthcoming events in Aerospace are noted in an area of the site reserved for conferences, trade shows, meetings, etc. One feature that all our web sites have is a Web Links area, pointing to other valuable sources of information held on other web sites. In the case of the Aerospace PN, we have been allowed to use the resources available from AERADE. The maintenance of our own list of worthwhile sites, their indexing and evaluation would have been a major undertaking. As AERADE covered very much the same area of interest it was very sensible to come together in this area of the site. The PN aims for interactivity between its members so an area of discussion forums is available for the exchange of views on any subject of interest. Other PNs have used their web sites for online and interactive meetings and it will only be a matter of time before the Aerospace PN joins that number. The Aerospace PN is designed to bring together all professional engineers with an interest in the subject, emphasising the electronic, electrical and IT aspects. Many other of the IEE PNs are also of interest to the Aerospace community. There are specialist PNs covering Radar and Navigation, Human Factors, Systems Engineering and Satellite Technology for example. All of these Professional Networks have a broadly similar arrangement. Joining any PN is free and almost painless. If you go to http://www.iee.org/OnComms/pn/ you can select the PN of your choice and look at what it has to offer. To register as a member, there will be a link on at least the PN home page to take you to the registration/logon procedure, or you go directly to http://www.iee.org/security/register/profile_summary.cfm. |
