Site of the month: SETI@Home: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence | ||
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ The SETI@home site is dedicated to a worldwide experiment which is part of the SETI Institute's search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The SETI Institute was founded in 1984 as a private, non-profit organisation dedicated to scientific research and education with its main mission to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe. |

| To participate in the experiment a screen saver is available to
download which enables SETI to use your computer, when ever it is idle, to help
SETI '
search out new life and new civilizations'. The screen saver
enables the SETI@home project to use idle computer power all over the internet
to analyse chunks of radio telescope data. By listening for artificial radio
signals coming from other stars, promising candidates can be identified.
The site reports current progress, including a sky-map of the most promising candidates, and contains many articles on the project as well as FAQ and message boards. So far nearly 5 million participants in over 226 countries have helped to analyse over 1000 million results, which equates to nearly 2 million CPU years. |
