About AERADE
What is
AERADE?
AERADE provides integrated access to a collection of key
aerospace and defence resources that can be browsed or searched independently
from their home pages. The three main services - Aerospace and defence
resources, DEVISE and ESDU Series can also be cross-searched from the home
page.
- Aerospace and defence resources
- This is a free collection of nearly 5,000 quality assessed
resources that have been created worldwide. The resources are selected,
evaluated, regularly monitored and updated by information specialists according
to AERADE's Statement of Quality. The service also
contains records for over 1,700 full text technical reports which have been
harvested from the NASA Langley Technical Reports Server using OAI.
- DEVISE
- The Defence Virtual Information Service is a special
collection of quality military and defence resources focussing directly on the
information needs of the armed forces. It forms a subset of the main aerospace
and defence resources database.
- ESDU Series
- ESDU provides subscription based validated and
authoritative design data and methods for aerospace, chemical, mechanical,
process and structural engineering. Each series is produced and validated by
committees of experts coming from a broad range of industrial, academic and
research backgrounds. There is a strong emphasis on the use of unpublished
information taken from sources only available to ESDU committees. AERADE
provides access to over 1,600 ESDU data item abstracts. For information on how
to subscribe to the full-text, please contact your
local ESDU representative.
- Reports Archive
- The Reports Archive is a historical collection of over
10,000 significant technical papers and reports produced by the Aeronautical
Research Council (ARC) and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics
(NACA). The collection has been digitised so all items are available in full
text.
- Shrivenham Index
- Produced by the Barrington Library at Shrivenham, Shrivenham
Index is a bibliographic subject index to articles on military science,
technology, management, defence policy, strategic studies, and international
affairs journals that are held by the Library. It provides abstracts of
articles and access to the full text online where possible, or alternatively
via links to document suppliers.
- ConferenceBrief
- ConferenceBrief is designed to provide notification of
forthcoming conferences and events in the areas of aerospace and defence that
are hosted and organised by third parties.
- JobsBrief UK
- JobsBrief UK provides links to the most recent jobs
listings made available by jobs.ac.uk and MatchTech plc. The listings cover UK
jobs in the academic and commercial sectors.
- NewsBrief
- NewsBrief is designed to enable access to the latest news
stories in the areas of aerospace and defence. The links provided in NewsBrief
invoke news feeds from the Yahoo news service, or alternatively you can choose
to search Yahoo news using the box provided.

Origins of AERADE
AERADE is an initiative developed by Cranfield University to
enable aerospace and defence experts to find quality, relevant information on
the Internet. The service is a joint venture between information specialists
within the Library and Information Services at the Cranfield campus (aerospace)
and the Barrington Library at Shrivenham (defence).
The need for more effective tools for the identification and
location of relevant information sources was highlighted in a major DTI-funded
study of the UK aerospace industry, which was carried out by a team from the
Kings Norton Library on Cranfield campus. The Aerospace Information
Management-UK (AIM-UK) project (Hanley, Harrington and Blagden, 1998) found
compelling evidence of under-utilisation of electronic information resources by
aerospace engineers and scientists. It recommended a number of initiatives to
raise awareness and improve access to useful resources, and to reduce the
threat of information overload. In particular, there was a call to establish an
Internet gateway for the aerospace and defence community that would act as a
"jumping-off point" for effective exploration and retrieval of information on
the World Wide Web. AERADE is specifically designed to meet this need.
Launched in November 1999, AERADE was initially a gateway to
quality aerospace and defence information sources available on the Internet. In
August 2000, AERADE was enhanced by the addition of three new services - ESDU
series abstracts, DEVISE and the Internet Aviator. NewsBrief was added in April
2001, and ConferenceBrief in December 2001. JobsBrief UK and the Reports
Archive were both added in October 2004.

AERADE in the community
- Intute
- AERADE records that are heavily focused on engineering
topics form the aerospace and defence engineering section of Intute, the UK
portal to the very best Web resources for education and research. Records
within Intute that have been provided by AERADE are stamped with the AERADE
logo.
- ESDU
- ESDU (Engineering Science Data Unit) provides subscription
based validated and authoritative design data and methods for aerospace,
chemical, mechanical, process and structural engineering. Significantly used by
international aerospace companies, it is widely considered to be the most
accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive collection of validated data and methods
of its kind.
